Matawan Huskies Travel Softball Club
MATAWAN HUSKIES 8U - 2K16/17
We hope that everyone had a great spring softball season! Thank you to all the coaches, players and parents for making AMYAA softball a huge success! We're so proud of this organization and how it continues to grow and even happier to see the friendships formed on the fields! Now that the season has come to a close, we wanted to let everyone know about our available travel softball programs.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Launched in January 2020 as an extension of AMYAA, the Matawan Huskies Travel Softball Club was built to allow our town girls an opportunity to develop their softball skills and abilities, and to play beyond the recreational season, which ends in early June.
The program currently has four teams, each being grouped by birth year and competing against players from local towns at the same age and skill level. Each of the last four summers, we've added a new team to the organization and we are hoping to do it again this June.
The new team will consist of girls born in 2016 and 2017 and will be known as an 8U (8 and under) team). This team will be using summer 2024 to get to know each other and get to know what travel ball is about. Consider it a trial run (For those with daughters born before 2016, we may have an opportunity for you too... keep reading!).
The 8U Huskies will be led by AMYAA Clinic Head Coach Bryant Annett. Bryant will be forming a coaching staff and those that remain interested in volunteering are sure to see it as a rewarding experience.
The time commitment will be light and the team will practice one or two times a week, learning positions and rules and potentially playing a scrimmage or two.
We expect that the girls will quickly come to love it and those that remain interested will then get ready for fall ball, which is played in September and October. Here again, the schedule is not expected to be heavy, but at this point, the team will look to participate in a competitive league against local town teams. Travel is relatively local and costs are kept to a minimum. We have lots of girls who play other sports, or participate in other activities, so don't let that deter you!
In the winter months (January through March), the team will practice indoors, once a week at a local facility, gearing them up for a spring season which will mimic the fall.
The long-term goal of the travel club is to build a pipeline for the school teams, giving our girls an opportunity to get to know and play with each other for years before they reach middle school. The girls in our program have benefited in many ways, forming strong social bonds, learning about teamwork and advancing their skills - and this coming year, we will have our Huskies players making up the vast majority of the middle school's team roster.
In the past four seasons, we've built a great network of dedicated coaches, parents and training partners and currently have over 60 girls and close to 20 coaches participating in the program.
We strive to keep costs very low (especially at the outset) and keep things fun for the girls and families.
